Become a Substitute Teacher in Nebraska

The state of Nebraska has two available types of substitute teaching certificates: State Substitute and Local Substitute.

Certification Authorization Requirements
State Substitute
  • Valid for (5) five years
  • Authorizes teaching within any subject at any grade level for an unlimited number of days
  • Maximum of 90 days per assignment (class/subject area of same students)
  • Completed application form
  • Payment of non-refundable fee
  • Record of Residence form or (2) two complete fingerprint cards
  • Official transcripts from accredited institution(s)
  • Institutional Verification form
  • Copy of teaching certificate (valid or expired)
Local Substitute
  • Valid for (3) three years
  • Limited to 45 days of teaching within any school year
  • Valid for teaching only in school system requiring employment
  • Applicants must have a minimum of 60 semester credit hours of college coursework including (1) one course in professional education and (1) one course in Human Relations Training
  • Completed application form
  • Payment of non-refundable fee
  • Record of Residence form or(2) two complete fingerprint cards
  • Official transcripts from accredited institution(s)
  • Written request from school superintendent for issuance of certificate
